ERS - PhD. Scholar

Sponsoring Agency:

Economic Research Service

ERS supports USDA programs with economic data, research, and analysis essential for sound decision-making.

Position Title

Research Associate

Position Description:

Through a variety of research projects, the selected candidate willdevelop his/her skills in applied microeconomics and public policy analysis.Assignments will be tailored according to the student’s interest.

Desired Skills:

Basic knowledge of macroeconomic theory, economics and public policy.Ability to write well.

FAS – International Trade (Master’s Level)

Sponsoring Agency:

Foreign Agricultural Service

The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works to improve foreign market access for U.S. products, build new markets, improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace, and provide food aid and technical assistance to foreign countries.

Position Title

International Trade Specialist

Position Description:

Assist in establishing rules governing international trade through negotiation and enforcement of trade agreements; addressing technical barriers to facilitate agricultural trade; developing support for the adoption of science-based regulatory systems and standards; enforcing international agreements on sanitary, phytosanitary, and technical barriers to trade; implementing programs to promote trade, economic growth, and trade capacity in global markets.

Desired Skills:

Basic knowledge of international marketing concepts and marketing techniques. Ability to prepare simple analytical reports. Possess leadership and teamwork skills, as well as communications skills.

FS - Civil Engineer

The Forest Service manages public lands in national forests and grasslands encompassing 193 million acres.

Undergraduate (student entering the college Junior year in 2008 preferred)

Position Title

Civil Engineer

Position Description:

Assist experienced engineers in technical and basic professional engineering duties such as: making routine calculations for reduction of survey notes and field data in preparation for project design by manual or automatic data processing methods, and preparing preliminary and final drawings for engineering projects.

Desired Skills:

Completion of 2 full academic years of study.

Assist in the collection and analysis of data for land management and project planning and implementation.

Work will be accomplished in the field (outdoors in mountains and rugged forested terrain) requiring long hours of hiking, bending, carrying, etc.

NASS - Statistitian (Agricultural)

Sponsoring Agency:

National Agricultural Statistics Service

NASS provides timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture.

Duty Location:

TBD (will be placed in one of the 45 field offices in the United States)

Length of Scholarship:

2 Years

Desired Majors:

Math, Statistics, Agriculture, Ag Business, Ag Economics/Management/Marketing, Ag Production and Technology, Agronomy, Animal Science or related field.

Academic Level:

Undergraduate (student entering the college Junior year in 2008 preferred)

Position Title

Statistitian

Position Description:

Assists USDA officials in providing recommendations concerning mathematical techniques and methodology employed in planning and conducting statistical surveys.Assignments involved the application of statistical theories, techniques and methods used to obtain and analize agricultural data and prepare estimates, forecasts and reports.

Basic knowledge of stastistic or math.

APHIS - Plant Protection and Quarantine

Sponsoring Agency:

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

APHIS safeguards agriculture and natural resources from the risks associated with the entry, establishment, or spread of animal and plant pests and noxious weeds to ensure an abundant, high-quality, and varied food supply.APHIS’ Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) program safeguards U.S. agriculture and natural resources from the introduction, establishment, and spread of plant pests and noxious weeds.

PPQ Officer

Position Description:

Conduct surveys and inspections, assist in the enforcement of federal and state domestic quarantines and regulatory ordersrestricting the shipment of plants, plant products, animal-by products, and other materials, in and out of the U.S.

The FSA administers and manages farm commodity, credit, conservation, disaster and loan programs as laid out by Congress through a network of federal, state and county offices.
