How to Apply
The PSLS program has a two-part application process. Students must submit an online application and mail supporting documents to our office. The application process is designed to gauge leadership potential, commitment to public service and dedication to academic/career field.
Step One: Apply Online
The following information must be submitted online.
Scholarship Application - Students must register and create a user account to access the online application. Please be sure to use an e-mail address that is frequently checked. Once you create a profile, a verification e-mail will be sent to you. Be sure to check your junk mail for this e-mail once you create your profile. You will not be able to start an application until you verify your e-mail address.
Essays - Submit four essays. Each essay must be between 400-500 words and focus on the following topics:
- What unique personal qualities or life experiences might distinguish you from other applicants?
- What is your career vision and why is this choice meaningful to you? How does the USDA fit in with your career goals?
- Describe a time when you exhibited leadership skills even though you were not the designated leader.
- Please describe your history of community involvement and how you plan to continue being involved in the future.
Upload Resume - Upload a current resume.
Step Two: Mail Supporting Documents
Two Letters of Recommendation - Submit TWO letters of recommendation.One must be from your academic counselor, advisor, or faculty member. The second letter of recommendation should be from a community organization or an employer. Each letter must address the following: 1) Personal strengths; 2) Leadership qualities and potential; 3) Academic and extracurricular achievements; and 4) Future academic and career aspirations.
Transcript - Submit official college/university transcripts indicating your most recent academic work. Transcripts must include your cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. If your transcript does not show a cumulative GPA, request that a school official confirm this information on school letterhead with his or her signature.
Proof of Application for U.S. citizenship - Current U.S. citizen do not need to submit proof of citizenship. Applicants in the final stages of obtaining U.S. citizenship will be considered for the scholarship program. Please submit a copy of your application for citizenship. You must obtain citizenship within one year of acceptance into the USDA Public Service Leaders Scholarship Program.
